In a North County Rivalry Match-up, the Templeton Girls Varsity Soccer defeated the Paso Robles Bearcats 2 – 1 at War Memorial Stadium on Monday evening. The game was a real thriller! Our opponent was very fast and extremely physical, so we knew we’d be in for a very competitive battle.
During the first twelve minutes of the game, both teams quickly attacked and then defended as the ball went up and down the field. We started controlling the tempo of the game by passing around the Paso Robles players. We possessed the ball on their half of the field and had several opportunities to score. One opportunity was when Merran Grindley received a beautiful pass from Ava Wendorff that split two defenders. Merran outran her two opponents, running into the Penalty Area. Merran took a shot as the Paso Robles goalkeeper came out and the two defenders surrounded her. The shot went inches wide. Later in the first half, Lauryn English sent an outstanding pass to Emily Puita who beat her opponent and dribbled toward the Paso Robles goal. As the defender gave chase, Emily turned the ball inside of the field, took a shot and scored. We ended the first half with the score 1 – 0.
The second half became a defensive battle with Paso Robles becoming more aggressive. About halfway through the second half, Paso Robles scored on a defensive breakdown, knotting the score at 1 – 1. We then increased our attack and a short time later Lauryn Simons was fouled in the Penalty Area. Emily Puita took the PK, but it went over the goal. We continued attacking and Lindsay English fought to get control of a ball in the Penalty Area. She was marked by two defenders, so she passed the ball and Megan Rubin sprinted to it and blasted into the back of the net.
After the kickoff, Paso Robles desperately shot the ball in the vicinity of the goal, in hopes of one of their players getting to the ball before our defenders. However, our defensive unit kept them from scoring. To Paso Robles’ credit, they continued to attack and shoot on goal until the final whistle. The game ended with a score THS 2 – Paso Robles 1.
Eagles are now 1W – 1L overall and their next game is on the road against San Luis Obispo, on December 5th.
