This month’s winners are (L to R) Derek Gomez, Izzy Cowne, Austin Marquart, and Nate Mututwa
Each month coaches nominate players from their particular sport that have stood out through their play, attitude, sportsmanship and/or leadership. Read below what the coaches say about each of this month’s “Athletes of the Month”.
Derek Gomez, Sophomore, JV Boys Soccer
Head Coach Tony Soltero said, “Derek is a first-year soccer player. He is a great leader on the field because of his work ethic and drive to improve his skill for the game. I can always count on him to give his best. Derek is very funny and very respectful to those around him!”
Izzy Cowne, Sophomore, Varsity Girls Soccer
Head Coach Mario Perez shared that “Izzy is a respectable, caring athlete who always demonstrates good character, sportsmanship and a positive attitude during practices and games. Isabella made several outstanding saves during the games with Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara and helped organize her defense. Her effort helped to keep the score close and her team in the game. Although not a Team Captain, Isabella demonstrates strong leadership qualities by supporting and encouraging her teammates when they need to re-group, always leading by example. She has a great work ethic and consistently works to improve both her individual skills and those of her teammates.”
Austin Marquart, Sophomore, JV Boys Basketball
Head Coach Nick Phillips said, “Austin has established himself as one of our leaders. He quickly moved into a starting role for games and is a grounding presence for the team. Austin has a great work ethic paired with the interpersonal skills necessary to keep morale high on the team.”
Nate Mututwa, Senior, Varsity Boys Basketball
Head Coach Andrew Cherry explained why Nate was his nominee this month. Coach Cherry shared, “Nate had a great Morro Bay HIT Tournament where he led the team in both points (38) and rebounding (22), earning him recognition as an All-Tournament selection.” Nate was also selected as the “Athlete of the Week” by the Atascadero News. Congratulations Nate.
