Spring Preview: Eagles Boys Tennis

Spring means tennis season is here and THS is always in the thick of the hunt for a league title. And while THS lost some amazing tennis players last year, they have an exciting team that is fun watch.

Last year’s senior tennis players (L to R) Cole Woulbroun, Chris Murray, Austin Wiebee, and Colby Grey.

News from the Nest recently talked with Coach Mary Housinger and asked her to share about this year’s varsity guys tennis team, her goals, new players and returning veterans.

Q & A WITH COACH HOUSINGER

News From The Nest (NFTN): What are your thoughts on this year’s team/season?

Mary Housinger (MH): We have a great group of guys this season. They are eager to learn and ready for League play.  We have a smaller group than in the past so no JV but we should compete well in the Ocean League

NFTN: What athletes do you think will stand out this year on your team?

MH: Lance Dunn, Zach Gonzales and Kilian Pankowski are all varsity returners. They will fill in both our top singles and doubles spots.  There are also three players up from last year’s JV team with the rest of the boys playing in their 1st season.

NFTN: What are you looking forward to this season/expectations for the season?

MH: My favorite part of coaching is watching the kids compete. Seeing them use the skills we teach to become better players and teammates is so rewarding. Tennis as a whole in our county seems to be down in numbers so it will be interesting to see what the other schools bring. I would hope that we are a strong competitor for the League title

NFTN: Who is the biggest competition you will face this year?

MH: I’m really not sure who will be our top competition this year but with Atascadero in our league for the 1st time it could be them. They are well coached and are a solid team. Also Morro Bay is always a contender and OA is never to be counted out.

NFTN: What is different about this year’s season than last year’s? (players, league, etc.)

MH: This year the biggest difference is the young age and lack of competitive play from a lot of our players. We have 6 new freshmen on our squad so they are going to have a pretty high learning curve when it comes to the physical part of the game. They are going up against mostly upper class men from other schools so they will have to step up right from the start.
