Spring Season Preview: Track and Field

Spring means Track and Field and THS is excited about our upcoming season. News from the Nest recently talked with Coach Tony Hodges and asked him to share about this year’s Track and Field team, his goals, new players and returning athletes.

Q and A with Coach Tony Hodges

News from the Nest (NFTN): What are your thoughts on this year’s team/season?

Tony Hodges(TH): We are really looking forward to this season. Just seeing the excitement from the athletes alone is reason to look forward to another season. The bulk of our squad has moved into the junior/sophomore age and are ready to really take that next step. This along with some great new talent in the freshman class is very exciting.

NFTN: What athletes do you think will stand out this year on your team?

TH: We expect to see Merran, Hope, and Tommy all continue their great success and build off of fantastic previous seasons. But also excited to see our distance crew take some great strides behind Senior Ashley Hurdle. On the jumps side we are looking forward to great things from senior and Captain Korah Lipsit.

NFTN: What are you looking forward to this season/ expectations for the season?

TH: I am looking forward to seeing these guys and girls continue to grow mentally and physically in a fun supportive atmosphere while showing I high level of character on and off the track. This group of kids is so much fun to be around and seeing their interest and willingness to learn really motivates our coaching staff.

THS Long Distance Runners

NFTN: Who is the biggest competition you will face this year?

TH: Our girls squad will be challenged by a strong Morro Bay team and on the boys side we are in a dogfight with Santa Maria and Orcutt Academy. Should be a lot of fun!

NFTN: What is different about this year’s season than last year’s? (players, league, etc.)

TH:  I think the team understands that yes, track is an individual sport but we are all working towards a common goal and we need to build off of each other to get through that finish line. This is a team sport, everyone is valuable and plays a huge role. You don’t have to be the best or win every race to have a huge impact on this team.

THS Jumpers

NFTN: What goals do you have for the team this year?

TH: In sports and as a competitor our goal is always to win but most importantly our goal is to create a fun and safe learning environment where we can promote positive growth on the track, in the classroom, and within the community. If we do this then winning will be a byproduct or added bonus.

NFTN: How did we finish last year?

TH: Last year our girls finished second in league and our boys finished third. We then sent a large squad on to CIF.
